The Great Shift: Generational Differences in Cannabis and Alcohol Use

In recent years, the attitude towards cannabis has shifted. What once was a substance that held incredible amounts of stigma that disproportionately affected marginalized communities is now something that 50% of adult Americans have tried. Cannabis is a stronghold in a legal state's economy, and in states like North Carolina, the legal hemp market has seen a boom in all types of business. While the medicinal benefits of cannabis cannot be ignored, the recreational benefits are also something to be celebrated! Our Gen Z folks are seeing a general decrease in the consumption of alcohol and a general increase in the consumption of cannabis products. Whether you are searching for an alcohol replacement, something to ease social anxiety, or something to boost your creative spirit, recreational cannabis is a safe, healthy option for those looking to let loose.

1. Safety First

When it comes to recreational substances, safety is a top priority. Alcohol, though widely accepted, carries a significant risk of addiction and overdose. Heavy drinking can lead to dependency, and alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous, even life-threatening. In contrast, cannabis has a much lower risk of addiction. It’s also virtually impossible to overdose on cannabis, making it a safer choice for those concerned about the long-term implications of their recreational habits.

2. Fewer Long-Term Health Risks

Long-term alcohol use is linked to a host of serious health issues, including liver disease, heart problems, and an increased risk of certain cancers. The story is different with cannabis. While it’s not entirely risk-free, research suggests that moderate cannabis use doesn’t carry the same severe health risks as alcohol. For instance, cannabis doesn’t cause liver damage or contribute to cardiovascular issues in the same way alcohol does. If you’re health-conscious but still want to indulge, cannabis could be the better option.

3. Enhanced Relaxation Without the Hangover

One of the main reasons people reach for alcohol is to unwind. However, alcohol is a depressant, and its effects can sometimes lead to unwanted side effects, like drowsiness, irritability, or even a nasty hangover the next day. Cannabis, on the other hand, is known for its relaxing properties without the same after-effects. Many people find that cannabis helps them relax and reduce stress without the grogginess or “brain fog” often associated with alcohol.

4. A Boost in Creativity and Focus

Have you ever heard someone say they get their best ideas when they’re high? There might be some truth to that. Unlike alcohol, which often impairs cognitive function, certain strains of cannabis are known to enhance creativity and focus. Whether you’re working on an artistic project or just want to see things from a different perspective, cannabis can provide a mental boost that alcohol simply can’t.

5. More Peaceful Social Interactions

Let’s face it—alcohol can sometimes bring out the worst in people. It’s not uncommon for a night of drinking to end in arguments, misunderstandings, or regrettable decisions. Cannabis tends to have the opposite effect. It generally promotes a more relaxed, introspective state of mind, which can lead to calmer and more meaningful social interactions.

While alcohol is still a safe option when used responsibly, cannabis offers a different way to relax. There are as many reasons as there are people to not drink alcohol; cannabis allows individuals the ability to indulge and relax - it's something we all deserve!
